More than a dozen Vance-Granville Community College students sang, played instruments, performed magic tricks and demonstrated martial arts on March 4 in “VGCC’s Got Talent,” the first event of its kind for the college. Organized by the VGCC Student Government Association, the talent competition was held in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus.

The winners, each of whom received a cash prize, were, in first place, College Transfer student Morgan McFalls of Oxford; in second place, Paralegal Technology student Brittany Jordan of Warrenton; and in third place, Vance County Early College High School/College Transfer student Elizabeth Gonzalez of Henderson. Each sang a solo, with McFalls accompanying himself on guitar. Jordan’s was an original hip-hop composition.

Other contestants included: Cassandra Saroza of Louisburg (singing/ukulele); Nia Brokenborough of Henderson (singing); Bailey Jackson of Wake Forest and Grace Whitley of Youngsville (martial arts);  Kemarie Jeffers of Oxford (singing); Bali Reavis of Kittrell (singing); Khalil Gay of Henderson and his band, “Haven’t You Heard?”; Brandon Adams of Louisburg (instrumental); Tre’quan Johnson of Henderson (magic); Mia Harrison of Henderson (singing) and Jasmin Davis of Henderson (singing).

Students Keyante Lindsey of Oxford and Shane O’Malley of Inez, both SGA officers, served as emcees for the talent show.

Also entertaining the large audience, but not competing, were the “Vanguard Spirit” Pep Squad and a step team from a Granville County youth organization, “Un-Rappin’ the Gift.”
