October is Fire Prevention Month

The City of Henderson will be offering free home inspections to include checking your smoke detectors and residence for fire hazards. Unlike previous years, residents will need to call the Fire Department at 252-430-1877 to schedule an appointment.

Fire prevention month is a great time to check the smoke detectors in your home, as well as teach children the importance of fire safety, and what to do in case of an emergency, such as the safest way to exit your home, and where to meet family members  once getting outside. If you do not want to schedule an appointment for a free home inspection, please remember to do the following:

  • Make sure all smoke detectors are working properly
  • Change the batteries in smoke detectors every six months
  • Test detectors monthly
  • Make escape plans in case of fire
  • Don’t overload drop cords or outlets
  • And as the weather cools, remember to keep at least 3 feet of clearance around all space and kerosene heaters
