VGCC Bioprocess program moving to Franklin Campus
The Vance-Granville Community College Bioprocess Technology degree program will be based at the college’s Franklin County Campus, starting in January 2017. The program has been located at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County since its inception in January 2006. The biotechnology lab on Main Campus will now be used primarily by the new Histotechnology degree program instead. VGCC programs receive high national rankings
Three national organizations recently recognized Vance-Granville Community College with high rankings for high-quality, affordable education, offered online or on-campus. The Community for Accredited Online Schools (AccreditedSchoolsOnline.org), a leading resource for higher education and college accreditation information, recently released its national rankings for the 2016-2017 school year. The organization ranked VGCC as having the nation’s 34th Best Pharmacy Technician program as well as the nation’s 49th Best Beauty/Cosmetology program. The 2015-16 North Carolina School Report Cards featuring state, district and school-level information about public school student performance and attendance, class size, school safety, teacher quality and classroom technology are now available online. VGCC Career & College Promise program offers free classes for high school students
High school students throughout the region can now register for spring semester classes at Vance-Granville Community College offered through the “Career and College Promise” (CCP) program. CCP allows eligible students to pursue a college degree, diploma or certificate while still in high school, without having to pay college tuition. The spring semester begins Jan. 9, 2017. STEM Hosts Spanish Spelling Bee
The STEM Early High School in Vance County Schools hosted its second annual Spanish Spelling Bee on November 9, with a student from Henderson Middle School taking top honors. Ximena Rodriguez of Henderson Middle, was the first-place finisher in the spelling bee. She topped Ashley Pendergrass of Vance Early College High, who finished second, and Emily Garcia of STEM Early High, who finished third. N.C. Industrial Hemp Commission begins work
The N.C. Industrial Hemp Commission recently held its first meeting, officially beginning work to establish rules governing a pilot program for industrial hemp production in North Carolina. The commission’s first order of business was to elect Dr. Tom Melton, of N.C. State University as its chairman. Melton is deputy director of N.C. Cooperative Extension and leader of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Program. November is Pecan Month in North Carolina, which usually signifies the busiest time of year for growers ahead of the holiday rush. A New Bridge on its Way in Vance County
A 64-year-old bridge northwest of Middleburg in Vance County will be replaced, thanks to a $780,880 contract awarded by the Department of Transportation. The bridge is on Wiggins/Anderson Creek Road over Anderson Swamp Creek by the Kerr Lake Reservoir. The bridge being replaced by Dane Construction, Inc. of Mooresville is considered functionally obsolete, which means it was built to design standards no longer used in bridge building. On Thursday, November 3rd, the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for Vance Charter School to celebrate the official opening of their brand-new building, located at 2090 Ross Mill Road in Henderson. Vance County Announces Keith Duncan as Fire Marshal
Vance County is pleased to announce the hiring of Keith Duncan as the County Fire Marshal beginning on November 14th. In this new position, Mr. Duncan will serve as the county’s liaison to the Volunteer Fire Departments and will be available to assist them with insurance ratings, training and other needs. He will serve as the county’s lead fire investigator and will be responsible for conducting fire prevention inspections of local schools, businesses and churches as required by the state. …
