A New Bridge on its Way in Vance County

A 64-year-old bridge northwest of Middleburg in Vance County will be replaced, thanks to a $780,880 contract awarded by the Department of Transportation. The bridge is on Wiggins/Anderson Creek Road over Anderson Swamp Creek by the Kerr Lake Reservoir.

The bridge being replaced by Dane Construction, Inc. of Mooresville is considered functionally obsolete, which means it was built to design standards no longer used in bridge building. It also has weight restrictions, which limit the types of vehicles that can use it. The new bridge will not have those restrictions.

Work on the project can begin as early as Nov. 28, with the new bridge expected to be open for traffic by April 1, 2017, and additional work wrapped up by Sept. 28, 2017.

The construction means a detour will be in place, using Anderson Creek Road, Satterwhite Point Road, Mabry Mill Road, U.S. 1/158 and Flemington Road.

This was one of nine road and bridge projects recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. They came in at about $43.5 million, which was nearly $530,000 under DOT engineers’ estimates. The contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders, as required by state law.
