Juvenile Justice In The President’s FY2013 Budget Proposal
President Obama and his Administration released their Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13) budget plan. The President’s budget proposal includes $140 million for critical juvenile justice programs. The President is requesting the following: -$70 million for the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) Title II; – State Formula Grants Program (increase of $30 million over FY12); -$40 million for JJDPA Title V Delinquency Prevention Program (an increase of $20 million over FY12 final) with no earmarks or set asides taken out; …

VGCC Celebrates Black History Month
Vance-Granville Community College kicked off a celebration of Black History Month with a special event on Feb. 3 as part of a series of activities coordinated by the VGCC Counseling Services department. RALEIGH — Grants from BB&T and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation are helping support efforts led by the North Carolina New Schools Project to hone the skills of leaders of innovative secondary schools across the state. Duke may have pulled out a win at the buzzer last night, but it seems UNC-Chapel Hill has a solid grip on number one—for best college value, that is. In January, the Tarheel school was named by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine as the number one top value for public universities. NC Students Continue To Improve Advanced Placement Participation And Scores
A total of 18.4 percent of North Carolina’s high school Class of 2011 earned a score of 3 or better on at least one Advanced Placement (AP) exam, according to the annual Report to the Nation today released by The College Board. Vance County School Dropout Rates Improve, But Is Still 5th Highest in State
Local Education Agencies (LEAs) with the largest high school dropout rates were Swain County, Lexington City, Thomasville City, Edenton/Chowan, Vance County, Person County, Kannapolis City, Scotland County, Bladen County and Granville County. Vance County saw 5.55% of students drop out for the 2010-2011 year. The number is better than the previous years, however with 2008-2009 at 6.87% and 2009-2010 at 6.38%. For 2010-2011 year 81 dropouts were blacks, 22 hispanic, and 22 whites. 75 were male, 54 were female. Reported …
