Vance-Granville Community College honored 22 students who have completed its one-year Practical Nursing program during a pinning ceremony on May 10 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. Two VGCC campuses to host Mini-Medical School summer camps
High school students from throughout the region are invited to learn about health sciences and careers in medicine by participating in the 2016 “Mini-Medical School” Summer Camp, conducted by the Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with Vance-Granville Community College. The SkillsUSA chapter at Vance-Granville Community College recently teamed up with national organizations and a local cancer survivor to find some potential heroes. The survivor, Whitney Johnson Espinosa of Henderson, who calls her campaign against childhood cancer “Whitney’s Hope,” organized a bone marrow registration drive in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus. Reps. Butterfield & Brooks Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Combat Zika Virus
U.S. Representatives G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) and Susan Brooks (IN-05) have introduced H.R. 4400, a bipartisan bill that seeks to add Zika virus to the list of diseases included in the Tropical Disease Priority Review Voucher Program at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Zika virus, which is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, can infect pregnant women and result in birth defects, including microcephaly and neurological disorders in newborns. VGCC registers 350 potential lifesavers
A recent Vance-Granville Community College service project added some 350 people to the registry of potential bone marrow donors. In partnership with the Project Life Movement and the “Save the Fox” campaign, the college held events on each of its four campuses during the week of Oct. 26-29. Maria Parham Guild Gift Gallery endows VGCC scholarship in memory of local doctor
Volunteers from the Guild Gift Gallery at Maria Parham Medical Center recently presented a gift of $25,000 to the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund that will create a new scholarship in memory of a Henderson physician, Dr. J. Franklin Mills, who passed away unexpectedly in July at the age of 61. That brings the total to nine such scholarships created by the Guild Gift Gallery since 2008.
