The Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers have once again made it easier for Hendersonians and Vance County Residents to report crime in the community. Together with the P3 tips application, citizens may now go to the Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers Facebook page and select the “Submit a Tip” button on the left sidebar. Captain Vance W. Johnson Named Henderson’s Assistant Chief of Police
Effective July 31 2017, Captain Vance W. Johnson will be the city’s Assistant Chief of police. Johnson, a native of Henderson has over twenty-four years of experience and a wealth of experience in law enforcement administration and practices. In his most recent role as Captain, he oversaw the Investigative Division where he was responsible for general, violent, and drug investigations, portions of our budget, and planning and research. Traffic Pattern Changes Coming This Week for the I-85 Improvement Project in Vance and Warren Counties
Additional traffic shifts are set to begin this week for the Interstate 85 improvement project between Vance County and the Virginia state line. The most significant change will be I-85 southbound traffic being shifted to the northbound side of the interstate between the Virginia state line and Oine Road. The shift will be coordinated using rolling roadblocks. This is the last section of southbound traffic being moved into the single-lane each-way pattern on the northbound lanes. The shift is taking …
VGCC Golf Tournament sets new record with more than $116,000 raised
Vance-Granville Community College’s 33rd annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament, presented by Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, hit a new record total by raising $116,675 to help fund scholarships for deserving students and support the mission of the college. That result surpassed the $104,160 generated in 2016, in what was previously the highest-grossing golf tournament in VGCC history. Henderson History: Richard Corbitt, of Corbitt Trucks Passes (May 16, 1961)
On May 16, 1961, Richard Corbitt, a well-known truck builder, died. Corbitt began his business as a tobacco merchant in the 1890s before creating the Corbitt Buggy Company in 1899. Initially building horse drawn buggies to haul agricultural products, Corbitt’s company began to produce passenger cars and trucks, and later buses and military vehicles. The company adopted assembly line production and that, combined with successful marketing efforts, transformed the small Henderson operation into the leader in North Carolina’s auto industry. Public Meetings Set for Next Week in Vance and Warren Counties for I-85 Improvements Project
The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold two informal public meetings next week regarding the I-85 improvements project underway in Vance and Warren counties. For more than 20 miles between U.S. 158 (milepost 213.5) in Vance County and the Virginia state line, contractor crews are repairing the deteriorating road surface, replacing bridges on the interstate and improving bridges over the interstate. Spring Litter Sweep Clean-Up Week
The Vance County Appearance Commission and the Henderson Community Appearance Commission are seeking volunteers to assist with the fourth annual Henderson-Vance Spring Litter Sweep Clean-Up effort. The event this year is being expanded for a week beginning Monday, April 16, and extending through Saturday, April 21. In past years, the event has focused on clean-up efforts for one day. The World Fishing Network is seeking nominations for the Ultimate Fishing Town. Voting evidently requires pre-registration, which is open until April 1.
