Safe Kids Week Safety Lessons
E.M. Rollins 5th graders learn about water safety from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Safe Kids Henderson-Vance held Gear Up Games for the first time yesterday afternoon at E.M. Rollins Elementary School as the debut event of Safe Kids Week.

The games were also held at Aycock Elementary School yesterday morning.

This week was proclaimed Safe Kids Week by Henderson Mayor Pete O’Geary at the Henderson City Council meeting of April 14, 2008. Themed “Gear Up For Safety”, its purpose is to promote basic safety and responsibility among local youth.

The games included:

Fire Safety — “Smoke Alarm Relay”

Pedestrian Safety — “Give Me A Brake”

Wheeled Sports — “Protect Your Brain”

Water Safety — “In a Boat, Stay Afloat”

Motor Vehicles — “In and Around Car Safety”

Participating agencies in the two 90-minute events included the Henderson Police Department, the Henderson Fire Department, the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Volunteers in Police Services of the Henderson Police Department, the YMCA, the Five County Mental Health Authority, Franklin-Granville-Vance Partnership for Children, and Vance County Emergency Operations.
