Chief Marcus W. Barrow of the Henderson Police Department is pleased to recognize Officer John R. Hammond as the Henderson Police Department’s Officer of the Month for October 2014.

The Officer of the Month recognition is a departmental award which is given to officers and Sergeants nominated by agency commanders for performance during the previous month which exceed the normal duties of a Henderson Police Department officer.

During the month of October Officer Hammond stopped a vehicle for running a stop sign on East Montgomery Street. Upon further investigation Officer Hammond discovered five (5) bags of marijuana, a digital scale and other drug paraphernalia. During that same shift, Hammond attempted to stop another vehicle that fled with Hammond making an arrest in that case. As a result of the pursuit, Hammond made another felony arrest and charged the driver of the vehicle with twelve (12) citations for traffic violations.

Hammond was on patrol in the downtown area during the month when he witnessed a possible domestic situation at a local business. Hammond investigated further and the male subject involved was wanted on a warrant and arrested. He was also found to be in possession of 31 bindles of heroin and charged with that as well. During a Section 4 seat belt check point Hammond attempted to stop a vehicle and the subject in the vehicle ran away. Hammond chased the suspect and arrested him and also charged him with having 230 bindles of Heroin in his possession. Hammond also made an arrest that resulted in charges for 16.5 grams of marijuana
