Learn to Grow Shiitake Mushrooms

December 19, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Shiitake Mushrooms can be grown successfully in piedmont North Carolina. Shiitake mushrooms are the second most eaten mushrooms and are popular because of their rich meaty flavor and texture that consumers like and have a longer shelf life than button mushrooms.  Some scientific studies suggest that shiitake mushrooms provide medicinal effects like reducing cholesterol levels, fighting viruses, cancer, and boosting the immune system.  According to D. Wayne Rowland, Agricultural and Natural Resources Technician with NC Cooperative Extension, Vance County Center, the Shiitake Mushroom Production meeting has been scheduled for Monday, December 19, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market located at 210 Southpark Drive in Henderson. If you are a farmer or a small gardener wanting to learn about the production of Shiitake mushrooms this meeting will help you become a successful shiitake mushroom producer.  During this meeting you will learn how Shiitake mushrooms are grown, sources of shiitake mushroom spawn, equipment needed to start shiitake mushroom production, how to inoculate logs for mushroom production and care and harvesting of your shiitake mushrooms.  For more information and to register for this meeting contact Wayne Rowland 252-438-8188 or by email wayne_rowland@ncsu.edu.
