* George Daye is the owner of Raemac Transportation, which has 13 vans to take people just about anywhere they need to go, whether it×?Ts down the street to see the doctor or up to Philadelphia to visit a dying brother. He retired from Harriet & Henderson Yarns in 1999 and wanted to drive a school bus because ×??I love having that wheel between my hands.×?? He wound up driving for KARTS instead and found his passion: helping people with medical conditions get to the care they need. He bought his first van in November 2000, landed a contract with the Department of Social Services the following April and hasn×?Tt needed to glance at his rearview mirror since. Raemac is thriving. ×??I need vans, I need employees, and I need money,×?? Daye said.
* Deryl Von Williams is the owner of The Everything Store, a consignment and curiosity shop at 317 S. Garnett St. She also has investments in real estate and runs the United Community Foundation. She was the one ×??outsider×?? on the panel, having moved to North Carolina from New York as an adult. ×??I×?Tm a maverick,×?? she said. ×??I don×?Tt go by the book.×?? She said she started in business as a 9-year-old, but she had a lot of missteps along the way. She moved to Raleigh with the windfall from real estate sales in New York and proceeded to blow through a six-figure bankroll with a lavish lifestyle. ×??I love to shop. I can×?Tt afford myself.×?? That proved to be the passion she needed to bounce back. She went to flea markets and started selling the things she bought. She built up the business that now occupies a downtown building she owns.
* Thomas Jefferson is the chief executive officer of Fit and Beyond Wellness Center in Henderson Mall on Dabney Drive. He started as a contracted fitness adviser at the YMCA in 1994 and went out on his own in 1999 in a space inside the mall. The business moved into a prime exterior space between Rose×?Ts and Hallmark two years ago. ×??There are a lot people sick in this country,×?? Jefferson said, referring to the national epidemic of obesity. He and his wife saw the need in Henderson for a fitness center that covered weight training and lifestyle management, and they have found success addressing that need.
* Gene Allen is a Henderson native and 1983 Vance Senior High School graduate who has hit the big time in Raleigh with his commercial cleaning company, Capital Cleaning. He was working as a probation and parole officer in Wake County when he got fed up, and commercial cleaning appealed to him. He started part time to get a feel for the business. He gambled on himself and invested his retirement money in the business, which he launched in 1996. Now his company cleans businesses throughout the Triangle, including Harris×?T nonprofit group and Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
* Tanisha Bagley is different from the other four in that her dream business is a nonprofit group that serves victims of domestic violence, but she×?Ts the same in that she is following her passion. She also has made a successful businesswoman out of herself to achieve her goal. Bagley grew up in Mecklenburg County, Va., and has family in Vance and Warren counties. She lived for a year in Henderson as an adult, but that was during an 11-year period when she said she was a victim of abuse and rape at the hands of her high school sweetheart and eventual husband. After she took her three children and left her husband, Bagley held multiple jobs, including tearfully cleaning toilets in a restaurant at which she knew she would never eat, until she found her passion when making a speech about her experiences. She now is a motivational speaker and self-published author who has sold hundreds of copies of her book, ×??The Price of Love,×?? through her Web site since November. She aims to use the money to open domestic violence facilities in Wake County.
