Terry Tracey Taylor Jr. should
be back in Henderson within days.
A Granville County man accused of killing his aunt in her Henderson home waived his right to an extradition hearing during an appearance today in a Connecticut court.
Terry Tracey Taylor Jr., 26, should be back in Vance County within days to face murder charges here, said police Capt. Charles Crumpler, who heads the investigations division.
Taylor was arrested in Milford, Conn., last week after police there found him in a blue 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass that belonged to his aunt, Betty Overby Carey.
Authorities had been looking for Taylor and the car since shortly after the discovery of Carey’s body in her home at 366 Wesley Drive on the morning of May 8. Carey had been shot.
Neither Carey nor Taylor had been seen locally for days before the grisly discovery.
Henderson police initially reported that Taylor was a person of interest in their investigation with the State Bureau of Investigation, and Police Chief Glen Allen said they were looking for Taylor to confirm that he had not fallen victim to foul play as well.
But the investigation increasingly pointed to Taylor as having a role in his aunt’s death. In the weeks after the slaying, Taylor reportedly sought medical treatment at two hospitals in New York, only to walk out before being examined.
Allen has said Taylor has no known connections in the Northeast and may have wound up in the New York metropolitan area simply by following the interstate north.
Milford police first held Carey for possession of a stolen vehicle. Officers then turned up a handgun stolen from Carey’s home and charged Taylor with possession of stolen property; Henderson police had entered the weapon’s serial number into a national police database, along with information about Taylor and the Oldsmobile.
The Connecticut charges are the main complication to Taylor’s return after he waived his right to fight extradition back to North Carolina, Crumpler said. He said the murder suspect has to appear in court again in Connecticut on those charges.
Crumpler was working on extradition arrangements with the SBI and Connecticut authorities this afternoon. He doesn’t anticipate a long wait to collect Taylor.
