Farm committee also needs candidates

We received the following notice from the Vance County office of the Farm Service Agency this morning. Farmer-candidates are needed in the northern part of the county.

Nomination forms for this year’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) County Committee election are due in the FSA county office as soon as possible but no later than Aug. 1. Denise L. Hight, the Vance County executive director, said the Vance County FSA office is receiving nominations for candidates for Local Administrative Area 1.

LAA 1 includes the townships of Williamsboro, Dabney and Townsville.

A farmer-candidate must sign a nomination form to enter the election. The form includes a statement that the candidate agrees to serve if elected.

Nomination forms can be obtained from the Farm Service Agency office at 305 Young St. in Henderson.

Hight said: “A county or area served by the FSA County Committee is divided into local administrative areas (LAA). One member on the County Committee represents each LAA. A person may vote in only one LAA in each county or area. FSA committee members serve staggered three-year terms; therefore, election may not be held in all LAAs.”

County Committee members are a critical component of the day-to-day operations of FSA. Farmers who serve on the committee help decide the kinds of programs the county will have and how they will be administered. They make FSA agricultural programs fit the needs of local farmers. Committee members apply their judgment and knowledge to make local decisions; however, they operate within official regulations designed to carry out federal laws.
