Milestones: A week for random ranting

Well, Henderson, I didn’t think it could be done, but you’ve gone a whole week without anyone prominent doing or saying anything dumb enough to get the whole column. Reverend Dale, where are you when I need you? Coaching football? Thank heaven! Now the boys will know how to properly argue a call. Please, though, Reverend, go to the City Council meeting tonight. They’re going to talk about police brutality! If you’re lucky, you’ll get pulled over on the way there. Don’t leave me hanging!

I can’t think of a single example since last Monday of some city official demonstrating appalling judgment. The only thing that came close was county Commissioner Eddie Wright talking about Internet hacking being a reason not to have direct deposit. I know it seemed like a good call at the time, but he forgot that forgery is a reason not to have paychecks. Counterfeiting is a reason not to pay in cash. What do they call “ice” in Hawaii, Commissioner?

Of course, the Vance County school system wants to charge your kids a hundred dollars a year to park their cars at the high schools. That makes perfect sense. It’s not like you paid to build them or anything.

Heck, those parking lots are expensive to maintain, too, with all that asphalt and gravel and weed poison. It’s a lot more expensive than running the buses. At least next year the SAT scores will be easier to explain. They all had to get jobs to pay the parking fee.

I can’t wait to see what happens with the Planning Board’s amortization plan. It’s very important to squeeze the small businessman as hard as we possibly can. Under the new plan, these businesses can die a slow, lingering death, rather than a fast and relatively painless one. Besides, I was really getting sick of being able to drop my car off at the garage and walk to work. Abandoned service stations also help increase the tax base.

Readers looking for something more articulate than this column need look no further than this Sunday article in The Daily Dispatch, “City Council candidates speak out.” I don’t know about you, but I’m moving to Ward 1 so I can stuff the ballot box for Mary Emma Evans.

Lastly, kudos to Kerr Lake for the “earth” water. For those of you who are against selling it to Wake County, I don’t think that’s going to be an issue anymore. One word, Benjamin:

Hydroponics.
