The LeSIA (Lehman Street in Action) Community Watch and Ministers Outreach Tabernacle held their ninth annual Community Day on Saturday, when Lehman Street was closed in front of the church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Henderson Police Department, the Henderson Fire Department and Vance County Emergency Management—911 were there to hand out safety information and give tours of a city firetruck. Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog made several appearances throughout the day.

More than 130 people enjoyed free food and activities. One family, the Terrys, even had five generations represented at the event.

Face painting, basketball, a minifootball toss, a moonwalk and other fun activities were available for children. Bingo was offered as adult entertainment.

Three candidates for the City Council attended: Elissa Yount, Lynn Harper and Bernard Alston. All were asked to speak to the crowd. Along with the candidates, participants were encouraged to speak out about what was on their minds and ways to make the neighborhood a better place.

Throughout the day, door prizes were given out, along with free books and school supplies for all the children who attended. The church also gave free clothes to anyone who needed them. Any clothes that were left over were to be donated to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
