Cable contract, litter on county agenda

The items slated for discussion at this evening’s Vance County Board of Commissioners meeting include:

– A public meeting will be held regarding renewal of the Time Warner Cable contract. Vance County has a highly similar but separate agreement from the city of Henderson. Both contracts expire Nov. 1. Representatives of Time Warner are anticipated to be at the meeting.

– Another public meeting will be held regarding an amendment to the litter control ordinance. The amendment calls for increases in fines from 25 percent to 100 percent for violations to the ordinance.

– Brian Short, the county’s director of emergency operations, will present information to the board regarding Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts. He was not present at last month’s Board of Commissioners meeting because he was en route to the Gulf Coast to assist in the relief effort.

– Senior planner Ken Krulik will report on Planning Board procedures and zoning information. Krulik is leading the effort to develop a countywide zoning ordinance.

– Human Resources Director Argretta Reid will report on personnel polices for the county on worker’s compensation.

– County Manager Jerry Ayscue will ask the board to schedule a public hearing to incorporate a change into the animal control ordinance. The change would require owners to protect animals from extreme temperatures. Also, Ayscue will discuss the county’s ambulance staffing arrangement with the city. The city provides three employees who staff a county ambulance at a city fire station. The county pays the city $5,000 per month for the personnel; however, the county budgeted payments only for July and August. The county has received a request from the city to reinstate the payments. In another city-county matter, the county manager will ask that up to $1,250 be allocated as the county’s share of appraisal costs for the current H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library building.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the old courthouse on Young Street.
