More actions by the county commissioners


During the Vance County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday evening, the board took some other actions:

– The board authorized spending $11,900 to fund the repair of the heating/air conditioning unit at the Henry A. Dennis Building. Further, the board authorized spending $500 for the previous recognition ceremony held for the 12-and-under girls softball team that finished fourth in the nation.

– The purchase of a $7,000 used vehicle by the vice squad was authorized. The purchase will be made using drug seizure funds. Another vehicle was declared surplus by the commissioners and will be sold at auction.

– County Manager Jerry Ayscue reported that a regional hub meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. for the purpose of reviewing the interlocal agreement. Commissioner Danny Wright is the official representative for Vance County. Wright said the session will be a work session to review and fully understand the interlocal agreement, which sets up how the four counties will work together in the hub project.

– During the public comment portion of the meeting, Oxford Road resident Lewis Edwards spoke about the Embassy Square project. He informed commissioners of his opinion that the proposed performing arts center should not be built until it is known whether there is funding to pay for it.

– Andrea Harris spoke to the board regarding the upcoming cable contract renewal, encouraging commissioners to ask Time Warner Cable to provide responsible programming. She also asked for television to show the growth and development opportunities in Vance County.

– Human Resources Director Argretta Reid presented commissioners with workers’ compensation polices and reports. They were accepted unanimously and without discussion by the board.

– Ayscue presented a resolution to get the names and addresses of property owners when they register a deed. It was approved unanimously.

– Ayscue reported that the Public Safety Committee has recommended changes to the county animal control ordinance regarding the protection of animals from extreme temperatures, but a public hearing must be conducted before the board may vote on the ordinance. A public hearing was scheduled for the Nov. 7 Board of Commissioners meeting.

– The county manager reported that he was in receipt of a letter from City Manager Eric Williams asking that the county reinstate payments of $5,000 per month for staffing the city provides for a county ambulance. The board referred the matter to the Intergovernmental Committee.

– The commissioners authorized $4,200 to make repairs to the Department of Social Services building. Ayscue said he thinks the state will reimburse 50 percent to 55 percent of the money. The building has moisture damage.

– The board approved $1,250 for the county’s share of the appraisal of the current H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library building. The expenditure is contingent on the city producing similar funds for the appraisal.
