200 pounds of marijuana in 4 50-pound packages.

Today at 8:24 AM, Henderson Police stopped a vehicle traveling on I-85 southbound near Parham Road. The stop was initiated by Officer S.R. Spence following a traffic law violation.

After further investigation during the stop, Officer Spence, assisted by other police officers and a member of the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, located a large quantity of marijuana inside the vehicle. The marijuana had a total weight of 200 pounds, packaged in four 50-pound bags.

Carnell Edward Townes, 25, of 179 Ridgewood Avenue, Newark, New Jersey was charged with trafficking marijuana by transportation, trafficking marijuana by possession, maintaining a vehicle to keep and sell marijuana, conspiracy to traffic marijuana and manufacturing marijuana.

Additional investigation indicates that the 200 pounds of marijuana was destined for sale and distribution in Henderson and Vance County.

The suspect was confined in the Vance County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bond. The suspect vehicle used to transport the drugs, a 2005 Nissan Titan, was seized by the police department. This investigation is continuing and additional arrests may be forthcoming.
