Water, sewer may rise 3%

During yesterday’s Public Utilities Committee meeting, City Manager Jerry Moss announced that he was at work on a new water rate structure.

He indicated, however, that he wished to recommend a 3% water and a 3% sewer increase across the board in the rate structure that currently exists.

The increase would mean $.24 more on a minimum water bill. When Home in Henderson applied the rate hike to the editor’s water bill for a family of four, his April bill went from $87.01 to $88.82. That bill includes a $27 sanitation fee to which a 3% rate increase was not applied.

Moss told members Elissa Yount, Lonnie Davis, Mary Emma Evans, and Ranger Wilkerson that he wished to re-work the current water tiered rate structure in the coming year.

The manager further informed the committee that it was his intention that the water rate be the same for everyone in three years, but that it would “hurt someone badly” if the rate were changed all at once.

Moss plans to present an ordinance to the council for the 3% rate hike.
