Evans reports Beacon Light resident concerns

An email received yesterday from City Council member Mary Emma Evans expressed concern from Beacon Light Apartment residents over their present living conditions.

The email was directed to City Manager Jerry Moss and several members of the city staff along with Henderson Mayor Clem Seifert and the city council.

According to Evans, residents report that they are being placed or forced into housing that in some instances is worse than where they currently reside.

“They are asking for our help,” Evans wrote.

In the correspondence, Evans requested a meeting with the Mayor, City Manager, Department Heads, and Committee Chairs to look into possible Section 8 violations that can be addressed by appropriate departments or city officials.

At a city council meeting on March 27, 2006, Henderson resident Jancey D. Quinitchette reported to the council on substandard conditions in Section 8 housing. She also presented pictures to the council of her Section 8 residence and alleged violations there. The complete article on Quinitchette’s presentation to the council may be perused here.

During that meeting, Henderson Mayor Clem Seifert stated a need to set up a work session to deal with the issue of substandard Section 8 housing. Although Seifert has met with landlords regarding the Davis Street CDBG project, no work session of the council regarding poor conditions in public housing has been convened.
