Closed bus station concerns city

At the beginning of Tuesday’s back-to-back Public Safety and Public Works Committee meetings, concern was expressed over the operation of the city’s bus terminal.

At the beginning of the Public Safety meeting, City Manager Jerry Moss stated that when the bus terminal is closed, passengers must buy their tickets from the driver.

Gupton commented that he sees people in transit sitting with their suitcases waiting outside because the building is closed.

Moss stated that it is against city code for the establishment to operate without a public bathroom.

At the end of the Public Works meeting, committee member Mary Emma Evans mentioned that she had received calls regarding the possibility of health and safety hazards at the bus station.

Evans said that there are no bathrooms, and that people hang around the terminal. She discussed the possibility of people being robbed, and talked about complaints due to a general lack of cleanliness.

The council member also said that the building and bathrooms are not clean.

Evans said that the building was an eyesore, and she was wondering why the city does not do something.

Committee chair Ranger Wilkerson responded that the city has to find out where its jurisdiction is.

When Henderson City Council member Lonnie Davis broached the possibility of providing outside bathrooms, Wilkerson responded that that could not be done.

It is not clear to whom the building belongs.
