The Vance County Board of Education will meet tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Administrative Services Center on Graham Avenue. Some items of discussion will include:
* Kimano Ragland will introduce himself to the board and discuss employment concerns.
* The board will discuss a mentoring class offered locally through North Carolina State University at the Administrative Services Center. The class pairs a mentor teacher and a novice (first or second year teacher) and takes a novel, scientific approach to the classic mentor/novice relationship.
* The Personnel Committee will report. Among new hire recommendations are three school nurses for new positions. Also of interest in the Personnel Committee minutes is an indication that Dr. William Bowers, principal of E.M. Rollins Elementary School will assume the duties of Special Assistant to the Superindendent on September 12, 2006. Dean Thomas, formerly an Assistant Principal at L.B. Yancey Elementary School, is slated to take the top job at Rollins on the same date.
* The Building and Grounds Committee will present the following report to the board.
* The Policy Committee will recommend to the board these policy changes.
* The Community Relations Committee will report on the Vance County Schools television show. According to Terri Hedrick, David Ruggles of Maria Parham Medical Center reported that he is unsure if the hospital can continue to sponsor the show. The show will move forward with its two remaining sponsors, Time Warner Cable and Sylvan Learning Center.
