Boy Scouts host business after hours

The Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts of America will host a Business After Hours in conjunction with the Chambers of Commerce from Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties this Thursday, October 5, 2006 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Presbyterian Point on Kerr Lake.

The public is invited to attend, but R.S.V.P.’s to the Vance Co. Chamber of Commerce are requested.

Presbyterian Point is a camp and conference center which was built as a Presbyterian church camp in the mid-1960’s on Kerr Lake, and has been used by the Henderson Vance YMCA in recent years. This year, the Boy Scouts and the “Y” agreed to share the facility, and the Occoneechee Council has begun a capital campaign to invest more than $800,000 in the camp, and another BSA owned camp located nearby, Camp W. D. Campbell.

The public is invited to come to the Business After Hours and inspect the facility, and hear about program plans for Presbyterian Point. There will be pork barbecue with all the fixins, and door prizes will be awarded. Presbyterian Point can be reached by heading north on NC 39 from Henderson, through Williamsboro and Townsville. Continue north on NC39 approximately 1.7 miles north of Townville; then turn right onto Rock Springs Baptist Church Road. (The road sign points to Henderson Point). This intersection is also marked, obviously, by Rock Springs Baptist Church – a stone church and cemetery which you will pass on your left as you continue north on Rock Springs Baptist Church Road). Continuing north on Rock Springs Baptist Church Road, at about 3 miles you should encounter the Right-hand turn to Henderson Point…marked by signs. Do not turn to Henderson Point…Continue North on Rocks Springs Baptist Church Road. Approximately 1/10 of a mile further, you will encounter and cross the border into Virginia; continue on Rock Spring Church Road for 1.8 miles and look for the Presbyterian Point sign on the right.

The Boy Scouts plan to raise the money needed to develop Presbyterian Point and Camp Campbell through a capital campaign, which is underway. The Boy Scouts are accepting donations for the capital campaign, and will allow you to make a pledge over a five year period. In addition to cash contributions, the campaign will accept appropriate in-kind donations.

The inaugural BSA High Adventure Aquatics Experience will take place for five weeks at Presbyterian Point next summer. Aimed at older scouts (over 13), the emphasis will be on fun and skill acquisition rather than traditional merit badges. Planned activities include water skiing, sailing a 25 foot yacht, motor boating, kayaking (culminating in a white-water kayaking experience in the mountains of Virginia); small boat sailing, and tubing as well as Indian lore, orienteering, geo-caching and celestial navigation skills.
