Michael Putney, the principal at Dabney Elementary School, reported to Vance County parents via the Connect Ed telephone system last night that a loaded gun and a knife were found in two separate student backpacks at his school yesterday.
There were no student injuries reported.
Putney indicated in the message that he acted on information given to him by a parent telephone call yesterday to locate the weapons.
According to Putney, the student with the handgun in turn identified the student in possession of the knife.

Putney encouraged parents to speak to their students to ascertain what is going on at school, especially in the wake of the recent school violence tragedies of last week. Parents were also told to urge students to report such incidents to adults at school immediately.
