Zoning amendments on city agenda


The Henderson City Council will meet tonight at 7:00 p.m. in its chambers at City Hall.

Tonight’s meeting includes the following items:

* A vote will be taken by the Council regarding the demolition of two structures on Powell Street. Both houses, at 623 and 629, have been condemned by the city.

* A public hearing will be held an an amendment that would permit dwellings on the ground floor of buildings in the B1 Zoning District by special use permit. The B1 Zoning District includes the downtown section of Garnett Street.

* There will be a public hearing on a proposed amendment to allow homeless shelters in the OIA Zoning District by special use permit. This is a residential section of the city.

* There will be a public hearing regarding the Gateway CDC application.

* There will be a public hearing regarding the petition received from Candice Cash requesting a city-wide curfew.

* Mr. Julian Oliver will present to the Council during the public comment period regarding the upcoming Veteran’s Day Ceremony on November 11.

* The FAIR Committee will report on a resolution towards a Fund Balance Policy.

* The Community Development Committee will report on meetings it has held regarding a proposed Certificate of Occupancy for rented dwellings.

* The Land Planning and Development Committee will report on a request concerning the city-owned Rowland’s Pond and well as city/county funding on joint programs.

Council member Bobby Gupton recently brought up the dispartity between city and county funding of joint projects, such as the library and Aycock Recreation Complex, at the last Intergovernmental meeting.

* The City Manager will report on possible names received from the Vance County Board of Commissioners regarding the Western Outer Loop. The Commissioners identified three possibilities at their retreat, which they presented in a letter to Jerry Moss in random order:

Option A

King-Broadwick

Option B

Tiny Broadwick (first segment from Graham to Old Oxford Road)

Martin Luther King (second segment from Old Oxford Road to Old County Home Road)

Option C

Broadwick-Decento-King (or similar combination of all three names)
