Read Acros America‘s Perry Library debut

“Read Across America” will be held for the first time at Perry Library March 2!

“If you keep your eyes open enough, oh, the stuff you will learn! The most wonderful stuff!” (from I Can Read With My Eyes Shut, by Dr. Seuss)

On March 2, 2007, Vance County children will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the National Education Association’s 10th annual Read Across America Day and the birthday of one of children’s literature’s most beloved writers, Dr. Seuss.

This nationwide reading party is part of National Educators’ Association’s Read Across America, sponsored by the National Education Association and many of America’s leading literacy, youth and civic groups.

The main event of Read Across America is The Cat in the Hat’s Birthday Party March 2 from 4:00 — 7:00 PM and will be held for the first time at the new H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library on 205 Breckenridge Street. Signup is available at Perry Library, and flyers will be distributed at area schools. Registration and activities begin at 4:00 PM. Activities include: booths from all participating schools and groups featuring reading fun and games; birthday cake for all; door prizes; costume parade; storytelling and teenpoetry slam; and a visit from Dr. Seuss’s very own Cat in the Hat (who is turning 50!)

Read Across America’s goal is to show children the joys of reading — on March 2 and every day. Visit NEA’s Read Across America web site at http://www.nea.org/readacross for the latest information about other reading celebrations. Co-sponsors of Read Across America include the American Library Association, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the International Reading Association, National PTA, Kiwanis International, Girl Scounts of the USA, the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, and many others.
