Friday’s open line

Although details are still emerging, it looks as if Vance County won’t get the new elementary school and/or middle school that seemed like a done deal just a few months ago. According to a key source, a vital piece of property on the proposed site was sold to a third party yesterday, rendering the investments already made in the remainder of the property, like site studies and architectural preliminaries worthless.

We’re told that the Vance County government failed to respond to the previous owner’s request for a counter-offer, which it was authorized to do by Vance County Schools. The $39 million project has been stymied over a $10,000 difference in purchase price.

We here at Home in Henderson believe that the schools are the key to economic growth in Vance. If you accept that premise, what does this do to our chances for prosperity in our lifetimes, for us and for our children?
