Raleigh -— Today, N.C. House Speaker Joe Hackney (D-Orange), Speaker Pro Tempore William Wainwright (D-Craven), Majority Leader Hugh Holliman (D-Davidson) and members of the House Democratic Caucus held a press conference to announce their seven-point plan, which seeks to improve education, health care, our state’s economy, the safety of our communities and our environment for North Carolinians living in all regions of our state during the 2007 session of the General Assembly.
The Democratic House members called on all legislators to join with them in promoting greater openness, fairness, civility and bipartisanship in order to continue moving North Carolina forward and to accomplish the important priorities of our people, while also strengthening the public’s trust in their government. “I strongly support the House Democrats’ Plan for One North Carolina and its seven major priorities for 2007,” said Rep. Michael H. Wray.
The House members announced their Plan for One North Carolina earlier today and called on the General Assembly to pass legislation related to their seven major priorities for 2007:
1. Strengthen people’s confidence in a government that works for them.
2. Provide the opportunity of a lifetime — a quality education.
3. Create jobs that support strong, healthy and more prosperous families.
4. Improve the health of our citizens — young and old.
5. Support our military families, bases and communities.
6. Ensure safer and more prosperous communities.
7. Protect North Carolina’s air, water and land for future generations.
Speaker Hackney, Speaker Pro Tem Wainwright, Majority Leader Holliman and other legislators detailed numerous specific proposals on these topics, which have either already been introduced or will be introduced in the near future. The complete legislative agenda of the House Democratic Caucus is attached.
House members also announced plans to hold additional press conferences in the coming days and weeks as they introduce and pass legislation on the priority issues addressed in their Plan for One North Carolina.
