Lately the idea of donations to Home in Henderson has been mentioned on the blog.
At first, we were adverse to the idea of accepting a donation. We felt as if accepting a donation was like taking money that we had not earned.
After mulling it over for a bit, we realized that providing the blog as a free service to the community can, in fact, constitute earning any money you care to donate to the cause. It’s like public television or radio during fund-raising time. If your conscience dictates a contribution, you may make one. If you don’t, the service is still available to you regardless.
The difference, of course, is that HiH is now a for-profit corporation, the fact that we haven’t made a dime of profit or drawn a penny of salary notwithstanding. Someday we hope to write ourselves a big fat check with the word “salary” in the memo.
I’m going to write something controversial now, so hang in there:
We believe that what we do is to the betterment of the community.
(I’m in for it now.)
Of course, you’re free to disagree, but before you scroll down to the bottom of the page and tell us what self-serving money-grubbers we are, consider this: HiH provides free publicity to worthy causes such a the Vance County Relay for Life, Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers, Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina, assorted church groups, youth organizations of all flavors, and basically any non-profit, non-political group that asks. We’re proud to do it, and we will continue to do it for the lifetime of HiH.
Why do we slave away at this blog and suffer the slings and arrows of outraged Hendersonians? I’ve lived in more places than many people ever thought of going: Pittsburgh, Long Island, Indiana, State College, Reading, Puerto Rico, New York City, Raleigh… but Henderson is the town I bought in to, the place where I put down roots for myself and for my family, made a home and a career. It’s the place where my son was born and I hope the place where he and my daughter will grow up good and strong. I believe in Henderson, Vance County, North Carolina; I believe in its people and its potential.
I also believe in the power of discourse to make the potential of Henderson and Vance County come alive. So although it frequently seems like I’m trying to dance Swan Lake in a swamp wearing army boots while juggling bowling balls, I go to school to teach our kids, I fight for the survival of our hatchling Boys and Girls Club, and I work on this damned blog, trying to add some light to the sum of light.
