State Board meets this week


The State Board of Education will meet next week, April 3-5, in the Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh.

Tuesday, April 3, 1-4 p.m.

The Globally Competitive Students Committee co-chaired by State Board Members Kathy Taft and Tricia Willoughby, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on middle grades education and high school graduation requirements and the Reading Literacy Strategic Plan. Discussion items include revision of the North Carolina Mathematics Standard Course of Study, approval of supplemental educational services providers for 2007-08, and a new AYP threshold for four-year cohort graduation rates.

Wednesday, April 4, 8:30-10:15 a.m.

The Business/Finance and Advocacy Committee co-chaired by State Board Members Wayne McDevitt and John Tate will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include action on individual class size exceptions waiver requests, approval of a number of federal grants and an overview of funding public schools.

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The 21st Century Professionals Committee, co-chaired by State Board Members Michelle Howard-Vital and Shirley Harris will meet in Room 504 (Video-Conferencing Center), Education Building. Agenda items include action on recommendations from the Advisory Board on requests for exception from teacher licensing requirements and discussion of educational interpreters’ and transliterators’ extension of employment.

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The Leadership for Innovation Committee, co-chaired by State Board Members Melissa Bartlett and Tom Speed, will meet in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. Agenda items include discussion of renewal recommendations of alternative school model charter schools, exemption requests under the Innovative Education Initiatives Act and policy issues for the NC Virtual Public School.

1:15 ­ 3:30 p.m.

The Board will meet in whole in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building. The Board’s afternoon session will focus on its Information Agenda including a discussion of the Future Ready High School Core Curriculum framework and a presentation on the 2005-06 Annual Study of Suspensions and Expulsions. Committee chairs will present reports to members summarizing discussion of their various agenda items.

Thursday, April 5, 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Board members will recognize West Wilkes High School (Wilkes County Schools) teacher Jim Brooks who received the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. They also will present a resolution honoring the late Senator Jeanne Lucas, receive the Chairman’s and State Superintendent’s reports, take action on agenda items as appropriate, and receive an update on the Future-Ready Students Plan and Implementation.
