The following is from a series of tips on safety from Lt. I.W. Robinson, Jr. with the Henderson Police Department:
Basic Street Sense
1) Stay Alert: Be conscious of who or what is around you.
2) Be confident: Don’t send out unconscious signals of vulnerablity. Avoid the look of being alone, unaware of surroundings, confused or lost, or unaware of the situation while speaking on a cell phone. Look people directly in the eyes, know basic self-defense moves, and always have a plan of escape.
3) Trust your instincts and use your intuition. If something does not “feel right”, remove yourself from the situation immediately.
4) Know the neighborhood: Use well-traveled routes and be cautious of strangers in the area.
On Foot
1) Don’t take short cuts. Stick to well-lit, well traveled streets.
2) Don’t walk alone. Walk with your spouse, a friend, or a group.
3) Don’t flash cash. Keep money hidden, and carry your purse tightly to your body.
4) Automated Teller Machines: Avoid using them at night where lighting and visibility to others is poor. Be cautious of other persons approaching you at the ATM.
5) Be prepared. Wear comfortable clothing when walking and always have an escape plan.
In the Car
1) Fill the tank. Keep your car in good running condition and keep your tank full when traveling to unfamiliar areas.
2) Lock the doors. Keep windows up and doors locked when traveling in heavily congested areas with lots of foot and vehicle traffic.
3) Park in the light. Always park in a well-lit parking area near a streetlight.
4) Be cautious. If followed, don’t go directly home or to an isolated area. Go directly to a police station or well-lit, congested store and seek help. Never pick up hitchhikers.
On the Bus
1) Be attentive. Stay alert while on buses, trains, subways, and other forms of public transportation.
2) Pick your spot. Aisle seats are preferable. If someone is bothering you, you will be able to leave more easily.
3) Don’t be ashamed. Tell the person to leave you alone if they are bothering you and be loud enough so others can hear and be alerted to your situation.
4) In taxis: Use a well-known company and wait for the cab inside.
If You Are Attacked
1) Don’t panic. Take control of yourself and the situation.
2) Don’t resist. Give up your property, not your life!
3) Distract: Try to distract or confuse the assailant: scream, run, etc.
4) If there is a weapon, remain calm; be cooperative and negotiate.
