U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington), the only N.C. member of the Homeland Security Committee, and a N.C. State University official will participate in a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday to advocate for stronger security measures at the nation’s schools in light of the recent shootings at Virginia Tech University.
At the request of Etheridge, N.C. State University Associate Vice Chancellor for Environmental Health and Public Safety David Rainer will testify at a hearing of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee.
During the hearing a representative from the Government Accountability Office will testify regarding a school security report requested by Etheridge. Etheridge asked the GAO in 2006 to conduct an in-depth national study of the federal government’s school security efforts. The GAO will discuss preliminary results during the hearing Thursday. As the former Superintendent of North Carolina’s schools, Etheridge has made school security his top priority on the committee.
The hearing will be live at this link.
