Opinion: Dawn of a new age?

My mother sent me an article from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette yesterday, an article so startling in the possibilities it raises that it actually gave me gooseflesh.

It seems that a man from Erie, Pennsylvania named John Kanzius has learned how to burn seawater in an experiment confirmed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

(No, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is not a tabloid.)

This could be bigger than pre-sliced bread. From a Pittsburgher’s point-of-view, though, I doubt it could be bigger than Steelers football.

Imagine a world of cheap fuel in endless supply. Imagine news reports like:

A fuel tanker sprung a leak in the North Atlantic yesterday, spilling thousands of gallons of seawater into the ocean.

Saudia Arabia announced yesterday that it would open its vast deserts for the storage of millions of obsolete automobiles that run on filthy, toxic fossil fuels. King Fraud expressed hopes that becoming the dumping ground for the United States’ useless vehicles would strengthen its faltering economy.

The oil cartel OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) officially disbanded today.

People all over the Middle East realized today that they were fighting over sand, quit, and went out for matzoh ball soup and falafels.

And, my personal favorite:

Oil drops to $5.00 per barrel (including the $5.00 barrel).

But who knows? In my lifetime I’ve already been through one cold-fusion scare.

It’s nice to dream, though.

Who said nothing good ever came out of Pittsburgh?
