During the meeting of the Henderson City Council on Monday, April 14, 2008, Interim City Manager Ed Wyatt asked for members to make a decision regarding changes to Henderson sanitation.
“We need some lead time on this,” Wyatt said.
Council member Mike Rainey moved that the city proceed with implementing once-weekly backdoor pickup.
The motion passed unanimously.
Member Mary Emma Evans asked whether a time period could be put into place to go back to twice-weekly pickup if the once-per-week pickup did not work.
Henderson Mayor Pete O’Geary replied that he did not think there would be a problem, and that people would be monitoring it.
Wyatt told Evans and the other council members that if the change does not work, the council “has every right to change it”. He said that the city would “try to satisfy the citizens.”
O’Geary said that the city would see an improvement with extra men “going around to get some of this stuff off of the street”.
Member Garry Daeke asked if a contract service to provide sanitation had been discussed. Wyatt responded that the city “had a visit from Waste Industries”. Wyatt then emphasized that he had worked closely with a sanitation transition in the past and that it was important to be sensitive to personnel. He said that no one would lose their position.
Wyatt told Daeke that he did not want to get into bidding at this time.
Council member Mike Inscoe expressed the hope that the move to once-weekly pickup would free up personnel.
