Transcript of remarks on school referendum

Here is a link to a transcript of the Vance County Board of Commissioners’ discussion of new school construction that took place during Monday’s regular meeting.

The transcript was provided to Home in Henderson by Commissioner Scott Hughes. HiH did not solicit the transcript, not did we know of its existence before being contacted by Hughes.

The transcript provides a context for this controversial remark made by Board Chair Danny Wright:

Well, as I indicated that it will be a tough sale to get a referendum passed. And you just have to look at the facts. The hard, cold, sad fact is that our majority schools are now African-American. The white parental support is not in that school and when it comes to a bond referendum, you’re not going to get that support, you’re not going to get that vote and so that is an issue that affects us with passing a referendum.
