Wonder no longer by attending the Relay For Life of Vance County Interest Meeting between 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Oct. 28 at the Maria Parham Medical Center Classroom.

“The truth is that even if you only have a limited amount of time, you can be a valuable volunteer for the American Cancer Society,” said volunteer Liz Catlett. “That is what this interest meeting is all about, we want everyone to come out and see that there is a place for anyone who wants to support Relay For Life and fight back against cancer.”

During the interest meeting, visitors can learn about the volunteer opportunities available. From leadership roles on the planning committee to support tasks like data entry, preparing mailings, making phone calls or preparing luminaries for Relay For Life. Anyone interested in starting a team for Relay also can come and learn more during the interest meeting.

Catlett and Rebecca Fleming, who are co-chairwomen of the 2009 Relay For Life, will be on hand with other current members of the planning committee will be on hand to talk to those interested in serving on the planning committee or helping in any way.

The event is floating, so interested volunteers can drop by after work or come out a little later in the evening.

Relay for Life is a community event where survivors are celebrated, those fighting cancer are honored and those lost to the disease is remembered.

Relay For Life offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer and to raise the money necessary to accomplish the American Cancer Society’s mission to eliminate cancer.

As a community event, Relay fulfills a need for belonging that we all have. It also creates a sense of community by bringing people together in a moving and fun atmosphere, with time for cultivating relationships.

“If you have been to Relay and wondered how you can participate, Tuesday’s meeting can help you find the best place to share your abilities,” Fleming said. “Even for someone who has never gone to a Relay, but you want to help out, we can find the right job for you.”

Patient service volunteers

Currently the majority of the volunteer roles in Vance County are for those who help plan and prepare for Relay For Life, but information also will be provided for anyone interested in patient programs, such as Look Good Feel Better and Reach to Recovery.

LGFB is a skin care and make up course for women being treated for cancer with chemotherapy or radiation. Volunteer facilitators, who are licensed cosmetologists, are needed for this program.

Women who are at least one year out of treatment for breast cancer are needed in the Reach program to provide support to those currently being treated.
