County makes plans for hard times

County Manager Jerry Ayscue reported during Monday’s regular meeting of the Vance County Board of Commissioners that the county is “on track from a financial standpoint”.

Ayscue made his remarks as part of the report of the board’s General Government Committee.

The manager noted that during hard times that county is looked to for assistance.

According to Social Services Director Kay Fields, who addressed the commission earlier in the evening regarding the Work First program, 50 families sought emergency assistance on Monday alone. She also said that there are 100 families a week in Vance needing food, and twelve children recently had to be taken into custody [due to economic conditions].

Ayscue said that the demand for services increases and resources begin to diminish.

The manager reported that county department heads have been asked to devise 2% and 4% reduction contingency plans.

“To be prepared is good business,” Ayscue said.

Commission Chair Danny Wright said that “next year’s budget is problematic”.
