Many people have approached me in the last 24 hours with questions and concerns about Vance County Superintendent of Schools Norm Shearin’s decision to make up the shortfall created by the state’s 1% recall of its funding allocation out of textbook money. Many also expressed some degree of concern over remarks made by Assistant Superintendent Bill Bowers to the effect that textbooks would be phased out because they do not completely address the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
With that in mind, we think it’s fair to ask whether or not the textbook is becoming as antiquated as dipping pigtails into the inkwells as we move further along into in the information age, or are they as tried and true as a spelling bee? Let us know your thoughts on today’s open line.
