The math teams from Southern Vance High School and Henderson Middle School competed in the 23rd Regional Mathematics competition at Chowan University on April 3, 2009.

This competition is one of the regional qualifying competitions for the State Mathematics Competition held later in the month.

Southern Vance fielded teams in Geometry, Algebra II, and the comprehensive divisions while Henderson Middle School fielded a strong team in Algebra I. When the dust had settled, it was good that they had shared a big bus, as they returned with multiple pieces of hardware and numerous qualifiers for the State Finals.

Wendy Bartlett, a sophomore at Southern Vance, placed second in the region in the Algebra II Division, and the Algebra II team of Bartlett, Leo Daniel, Jason Taylor, and Azmar Williams from Southern finished second in the region as well.

Henderson Middle School team members Felicia Branch, Jackson Thompson, and Brenda Rodriguez finished second, fourth, and sixth respectively in the Algebra I competition. The team composed of those three students beat out all other elementary, middle, and high school teams in the region for the Regional Algebra I title and they, along with Jonathan Sanders, Jadavia Hunt, Maria Ruiz and Justin Hedgepeth, combined to take the Best Middle School Regional trophy.

Bartlett, from SVHS, along with Branch, Thompson, and Rodriguez, from HMS, will be representing their respective schools at the North Carolina Mathematics Competition State Finals on April 30, 2009 at the North Carolina Wesleyan College site.
