To the editor: Concerned about fire response time

I think that the issue should be addressed regarding the length of time it took Fire Fighters and police officials to get to a fire that was burning down an abandoned house off of Raleigh Road Saturday night.

I sat there and watched the fire burning this house for nearly 30 minutes before any sign of help could be heard, with the dwelling being right off of a busy street. Many lives could have been lost had the fire caught on to the next house.

It was amazing to me that Kittrell, Watkins and Cokesbury fire departments got to the scene within a minute of Bearpond and the Main Fire Station located on Dabney Drive. They have farther to go but yet seemed to have gotten there around the same time.

I don’t understand. Do our men and women need more training? What was the hold up after countless calls to 911? I sat helplessly watching what could have been a lot worse. But to give credit where credit is due, our men and women of Henderson once on scene had the blaze under control within a few minutes of arrival. They did a great job containing the blaze, but I feel they need to arrive on scene a lot faster, especially when dealing with peoples’ lives.
