Home in Henderson received this press release yesterday from Vance County Schools:
Parents, students and staff members with Vance County Schools are urged to attend a meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 17, in the auditorium in Building 2 on the main campus of Vance-Granville Community College near Henderson to support plans for the “1 to 1 Initiative” program which will provide laptop computers for all ninth-grade students in local public high schools.
The meeting Monday is a community meeting conducted by the Golden LEAF Foundation. Vance County Schools is applying for some of the $2 million in grant funding that is available through the foundation to help with the costs of the “1 to1 Initiative.”
The school systems’ grant request will be one of several considered at the meeting to receive funding.
The “1 to 1 Initiative” will initially provide laptop computers for all ninth graders at Northern Vance High School for the 2009-2010 school year, and then also provide laptops for all ninth graders at Southern, Western and Early College high schools for the 2010-2011 school year. The Northern Vance program will be used as a model and training program for the other schools. All teachers, ninth-grade students and their parents must be trained before the program can be implemented at each high school.
