Sixteen names on slate for new school

Public hearing on names to be held Thursday, December 3

A total of sixteen suggested names for the new elementary school now under construction in the southern part of Vance County will be open for public comment during a scheduled public hearing at 7:00 p.m. today, Thursday, December 3, 2009 in the auditorium at E.M. Rollins Elementary School.

The public is invited to attend.

All of the names were received by the Vance County Schools’ Public Information Office by the end of the business day on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, the established deadline for the written submission of names. Comments on these submitted names are the only ones which will be discussed during the public hearing. A seven-member Facilities Naming Committee, appointed by the Vance County Board of Education, will preside over the public hearing.

Suggested names for the school and those which will be considered by the committee include:

  • Clark-Garrett Elementary School
  • Garrett Road Elementary School
  • Rock Mill Road Elementary School

The Facilities Naming Committee is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8,2009 in the Vance County Schools’ Administrative Services Center on Graham Avenue. At that time, committee members will review the names and comments made during the public hearing. It is likely that the Board of Education will consider the committee’s recommendations at its meeting on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the school system’s Administrative Services Center.
