Henderson Middle School Citizens School Program
On December 9, 2009, students from Henderson Middle School will shed their traditional characters as young learners and take on the roles of professional lawyers, doctors, scientists, event planners, poets, mathematicians, and financial analysts.
Kids learn by doing – from real experts. Since September, students in the Citizen Schools program have been working with professionals in different career fields to understand why it is important to take advantage of the education they are currently receiving.
“Students complain that they hate to do math and they hate to write, but when they learn that being a video game designer requires the use of math every day, or that a news journalist needs to have strong reading and writing skills, they become passionate about doing well in those subjects,” said Angelo Cross, Campus Director of the Citizen Schools Program at Henderson Middle.
Citizen Schools is an education reform non-profit organization. It is has a growing national network of after-school education programs for students in the middle grades (6th, 7th and 8th) which complement classroom learning by engaging students in hands-on learning projects led by adult volunteers after school and supported by a staff of professional educators.Â
