Vance County Board of Commissions member Dan Brummitt floated an idea to fellow members during yesterday’s work session.
Identifying what he called a city “cash crunch”, Brummitt proposed buying a 20% stake in the Kerr Lake Regional Water System (KLRWS) from the city of Henderson.
The city currently holds 60% of the system and is the majority shareholder, with Granville County and the city of Oxford holding the remaining interest in the system.
Brummitt said that the city would maintain its preeminence in the system. He noted that the county would have the water supply necessary for its fledgling county-wide water system and that Henderson would get cash “to facilitate their needs”.
Commissioner Eddie Wright immediately endorsed the idea by stating, “I like it”.
Commission Chair Danny Wright said that the Intergovernmental Committee could discuss the matter during its Thursday meeting, and that the two governments would need to work out a cost.
County Manager Jerry Ayscue was asked to put the matter on Thursday’s joint meeting agenda.
