Hughes requests county “un-table” zoning

Vance County Commissioner Scott Hughes presented a motion during Monday’s regular meeting of the Vance County Board of Commissioners to “un-table” the county-wide zoning project.

Vance County commissioners voted to table the push for county zoning in a split 4-3 vote during a meeting on June 4, 2007.

The decision to table the zoning issue was made to facilitate the county’s bid to install a county-wide water system. It was felt that the issues of zoning and county-wide water were becoming conflated to the detriment of the proposed water system.

Hughes said in support of his motion that zoning was to be tabled when Phase 1A of the water system was complete. He went on to say that zoning can be a tool for development, and that “an overwhelming number of people in my district support county-wide zoning”.

The motion was seconded by Commissioner Eddie Wright.

Member Tim Pegram asked how a lack of county zoning was hurting those in Hughes’ district.

Hughes’ district is comprised of Henderson city residents. Henderson is zoned.

Hughes responded by saying that a lack of economic development “has an effect on everybody”.

Commission Chair Danny Wright claimed that the county-wide water project would be hurt if Hughes’ motion was passed. He said that the water issue has not yet been resolved and that he would not support the motion.

The motion failed 5-2, with only Hughes and Eddie Wright supporting it.
