Special Olympics Torch Run June 1

NC Special Olympic Torch Run 2009

The NC Special Olympics Law-Enforcement Torch Run will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. starting at the Henderson Police Department located at 200 Breckenridge Street in downtown Henderson.

Officers from the Henderson Police Department, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will be participating in the event.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is an international series of relays by law enforcement officers to raise money for Special Olympics. A Torch Run is held each year in every state throughout the United States and in 25 countries around the world. Officers carry the torch to signify the achievements and the personal courage of Special Olympics athletes.

North Carolina law enforcement volunteers participate in the Torch Run by collecting donations though the sale of Torch Run T-shirts. A donation of $13 is requested for a t-shirt. A donation of $15.00 is requested for a Torch Run hat, and a donation of $25 will net donors both a hat and a t-shirt.

The Senior Citizens’ Home of Henderson donated the t-shirts for the torch runners.

The public can support Special Olympics by purchasing a t-shirt. Please contact Henderson Police Lt. Irvin Robinson at 252.431.6061. Robinson is the local coordinator for the event.

The two and half mile run will begin at the Henderson Police Department on Breckenridge Street and continue south on Garnett Street to Dabney Drive, where runners will turn onto Oxford Road and continue to the city limits at Sunset Gardens.

Henderson Mayor James “Pete” O’Geary will open the Special Olympics ceremony with remarks. Program speakers include Henderson Police Chief Keith Sidwell and Vance County Sheriff Peter White. Sidwell and White will light the torch.
