North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue announced in a letter to the Henderson Police Department dated May 28, 2010 that the department has been awarded grant funding for the 2010-2011 state fiscal year from the NC Governor’s Crime Commission for two projects.
One grant will provide $59,937.25 in grant funding to expand the department’s Community Revitalization Initiative. This initiative was launched in 2009 with the Police Department partnering with other city, county and state agencies as well as private businesses, utility services providers and rental property owners to address quality of life issues such as substandard housing, long-term crime problems in neighborhoods, larcenies of water and water meters from the City of Henderson, larcenies of electrical power and larceny of cable services.
Many of these problems occur in the same areas in which other crimes such as narcotics sales, other larcenies and violent crimes are frequently reported. Addressing these issues enables officers to work more closely within their zones and to work on prevention efforts to prevent other crimes and the environment that can foster crimes.
The other grant will provide a 50% match for the department to purchase mobile 800 MHz radios for police vehicles to complete the implementation of the department’s move to the NC State Voice Interoperability for Emergency Responders (VIPER) radio system. This grant will fund $15,150 of the radio purchases.
