Int’l Walk to School Day October 2010

Int'l Walk to School Day October 2010

Safe Kids Henderson-Vance and the Henderson Police Department walked with children at E. M. Rollins Elementary School on October 6, 2010, the International Walk to School Day.

Over 400 students, staff, and volunteers participated in the International Walk to School Day event.

Students participated by walking to school from the ball field at E.M. Rollins Park.

After the walk, volunteers from Safe Kids Henderson-Vance and members of the Henderson Police Department went to every classroom and talked with students about pedestrian safety. Children were given educational materials, retro-reflective stickers, and activity books that were donated by FedEx.

FedEx is a program Sponsor of Safe Kids Walk This Way (WTW) events.

Officer A.M. Feingold of the Henderson Police Department and the Coordinator of Safe Kids Henderson-Vance planned and coordinated the event.

Nationwide, Safe Kids USA held more than 600 International Walk to School Day activities as part of the Safe Kids Walk This Way pedestrian safety program. For the eleventh year, Safe Kids coalitions teamed up with hundreds of FedEx volunteers to teach children how to be safer pedestrians as they walk to and from school and in the community.

Every year in the U.S. more than 244 children ages 14 and under die nationwide from pedestrian-related injuries and more than 13,000 children go to the emergency room.  Road traffic injuries are the second leading cause of death among children ages 10 to 14 worldwide. In the U.S. between 2000 and 2009, the number of child pedestrian fatalities has decreased by 49%, with the 4- to 7-year-old age group showing the largest decrease (58%). Safe Kids Henderson-Vance activities are designed to help children walk safely all year round.

Safe Kids Henderson-Vance works to prevent accidental childhood injury, the leading cause of death and disability for children ages 1 to 14 under. Safe Kids Henderson-Vance is a member of Safe Kids USA, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury. Safe Kids Henderson-Vance is led by the Henderson Police Department.
