To the editor: Support Hester

Finally the election is over. Congratulations to Mr. Hester for a job well done.

I pray he is able to do the things he said he would. I know for a fact that there are two certainties that accompany the position as county commissioner. Actually much more than two but the top two in my opinion are that it takes 4 votes to make a change and any 1 commissioner can figure out how to change the world but if that commissioner can’t get 3 other votes, it doesn’t matter. Second, being a commissioner is a really hard job. It’s no cakewalk. I came to the board telling myself that I would be a true statesman and would make everyone happy. Wrong! I should have known better. Although many elected officials develop thick skin and the ability to ignore rude and hateful people, they are all human and hateful actions toward them make an already hard job more difficult.

So I urge my supporters to line up and support Mr. Hester. We all should have the same goal. That is to make Vance County better. Commissioner Danny Wright told me when I was first elected, once the vote is cast, move on. That is what needs to be done now. I don’t have an issue with Mr. Hester and would love to serve with him on the board one day. But even if I did have a personal issue with Mr. Hester, I would still support him. Anyone who truly has the best intentions for Vance County should feel the same. His job is hard enough. Let’s not make it harder. The voters chose to replace me with Mr. Hester and in no way does that make me upset with the voters or Mr. Hester. It makes me want to do what I can to help and first and foremost, that means support the officials in office. If I am able and willing to do this, anyone should be able to do it as well. The same is true with every other elected official. Mr. Hester earned my respect because during his campaign he chose to stick with the issues and ran a smear free campaign just as I did. Mr. Hester filed for office against me just as I did against him 4 years ago. Neither of us filed because of dislike for the other. We both felt like we could make Vance County better. A person with that desire and willingness should only receive support from the very people he is trying to help.
