Council to hold special meeting on vacant seat

Special meeting called without 48 hours notice

The Henderson City Council will meet tomorrow, Friday, February 4, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. for the purpose of considering a resolution that will set forth a process by which an individual will be appointed to fill the Ward 1 ward seat.

The Ward 1 ward seat was left vacant when council member Mary Emma Evans died of cancer in her home on January 21, 2011.

Home in Henderson received notice of the meeting in an email today at 1:38 p.m., less than 24 hours before the beginning of the called meeting. North Carolina open meeting law requires that special meeting notices be given to media at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting, except under emergency circumstances.

The notice received by Home in Henderson characterized the meeting as a “special meeting”, not an emergency meeting.
